PENANG: A TikTok video showing a lifeguard’s swift action to save drowning children at Hard Rock Hotel Penang has garnered over three million views.
The video, shared by TikTok user @stapagonjeng, unintentionally captured the dramatic rescue while filming family members enjoying the water slides. The footage shows the lifeguard sprinting into action and reaching out to save a struggling child in the pool.
“I was filming Stapa and my kids playing when a Hard Rock staff member rushed in to rescue a drowning child. It was incredible to witness,” wrote @stapagonjeng in the caption.
The viral clip has received 68,400 likes and widespread praise for the lifeguard’s alertness and professionalism.
“Hard Rock staff provide excellent pool surveillance. I’ve stayed there multiple times,” commented user Syira Shahar.
Meanwhile, some commenters defended @stapagonjeng, who was criticised for not noticing the incident sooner. They pointed out the challenge of monitoring an entire pool while focused on filming family.
“The person filming was recording their kids. They were focused on their family; how could they notice the drowning child? Critics didn’t pay attention to the context,” remarked user Ariffrifqie17.
The incident has also sparked discussions on pool safety, with user Luna questioning whether there are height restrictions for children in the area.
