Liverpool came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United in their opening match of the 2026/27 Premier League season at St James’ Park.
Newcastle started strongly, with Anthony Elanga putting the hosts ahead in the fifth minute. Liverpool responded through Cody Gakpo in the 55th minute, but Joe Willock restored Newcastle’s lead just two minutes later.
With Newcastle closing in on victory, Liverpool were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time after Victor Munoz was brought down in the box. Dominik Szoboszlai kept his composure and converted in the 99th minute to rescue a valuable point for Liverpool.
The result also marked the competitive debuts of new managers Andoni Iraola for Liverpool and Matthias Jaissle for Newcastle, setting the stage for an intriguing season ahead.
