The government has expanded electricity bill protection for domestic consumers using up to 800 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month, raising the previous threshold of 600 kWh, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced on Thursday. The measure applies to electricity consumption from September until December 31, 2026.
Under the temporary measure, households consuming 800 kWh or less per month will be exempted from the Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA), Retail Charge and Sales and Service Tax (SST). Anwar said the decision was introduced as an immediate response to cost-of-living pressures.
The Prime Minister explained that recent haze and hotter weather have caused some households to use more electricity, pushing their monthly consumption above the previous 600 kWh protection threshold and resulting in unusually higher bills.
Anwar thanked Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), and the Energy Commission for facilitating the immediate implementation of the measure.
The government will continue monitoring fuel costs and energy market conditions, with Anwar saying future electricity tariff decisions must balance affordability for consumers, security of electricity supply and the sustainability of the national energy sector.
