ISKANDAR PUTERI, Aug. 20 — Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) are aiming for a historic achievement when they face Kuching City FC in the Piala Sumbangsih season opener tomorrow.
JDT head coach Xisco Munoz said winning the trophy remains the team’s main objective, while the opportunity to set a new world record for the longest unbeaten run in league football would be an important milestone for the club and its supporters.
JDT are currently unbeaten in league competition since 2021 and have matched the world record of 108 consecutive league matches without defeat, previously held by Ivory Coast club ASEC Mimosas. The Southern Tigers reached the mark after their 14–1 victory over Kelantan TRW in May.
A win or draw against Kuching City would see JDT move beyond the 108-match mark and establish a new world record.
However, Munoz expects a tough challenge from Kuching City, particularly because of their physical strength, organised defence and ability to launch quick counter-attacks. Kuching City coach Aidil Sharin Sahak, meanwhile, said his side are not intimidated and will focus on their own game plan and giving their best on the pitch.
With a trophy and a potential world record at stake, all eyes will be on JDT as they begin the new season.
