Analysts have argued that there is no need to rush the 16th General Election (GE16), saying Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should be given sufficient time to complete the government’s ongoing reform agenda.
Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) senior lecturer Misrinah Misban said Anwar is currently pursuing efforts to address misconduct and corruption associated with previous administrations. She said these initiatives are important for Malaysia’s long-term progress, even though some parties may perceive them as politically motivated.
Meanwhile, UiTM Seremban senior lecturer Dr Mazlan Che Soh said an early election is unnecessary as long as the government remains stable and continues to hold a mandate to govern. He stressed that Malaysia should not remain constantly in “election mode”, with attention instead directed towards governance, economic recovery and public welfare.
Mazlan said reform should go beyond prosecuting individuals and focus on strengthening institutions to prevent corruption and abuse of power from recurring. This includes improving transparency in government procurement, freedom of information, checks and balances, and institutional accountability.
However, giving the government time to complete these reforms does not mean giving it a “blank cheque”. Mazlan stressed that the administration must continue to face scrutiny from Parliament, the media, civil society and the public, while enforcement must remain based on law, evidence and due process. Ultimately, voters will have the opportunity at GE16 to judge whether the government has delivered on its promises.
