England moved one step closer to their World Cup dream after defeating Norway 2-1 in extra time to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2018.
Jude Bellingham was the hero, scoring both of England’s goals. Norway took the lead through Andreas Schjelderup in the 36th minute, but Bellingham equalised before half-time and later scored the winning goal in the third minute of extra time.
Norway thought they had regained the lead in the second half, but Torbjørn Heggem’s goal was ruled out after a video review found that Erling Haaland had committed a foul inside the penalty area. Haaland, who had scored seven goals in the tournament, failed to find the net for the first time.
The 1966 champions will now face the winner of Argentina and Switzerland for a place in the World Cup final. Before kick-off, both teams also observed a moment of silence in memory of South African midfielder Jayden Adams.
