Malaysians can still enjoy durian during the season, but intake should be controlled to avoid consuming too many calories and carbohydrates.
Dietitian Khoo Wei Jin said the issue is not durian itself, but the amount eaten. A medium-sized durian seed contains about 45 calories and eight grams of carbohydrates. Two medium-sized seeds are considered one fruit serving, while 15 seeds can reach around 675 calories and 120 grams of carbohydrates, which is close to a full meal.
He advised the public to limit durian intake to about two medium-sized seeds per serving, avoid eating large amounts after a heavy rice-based meal, and share durian with family or friends.
People with diabetes, prediabetes, insulin resistance, weight issues or a family history of diabetes are also encouraged to seek advice from a dietitian or health professional.
