The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) has continued to worsen, with more than 1,800 confirmed cases reported as the virus spreads to a fourth province.
Health authorities said the latest suspected cases were detected in Tshopo and Haut-Uele, raising concerns that the outbreak is expanding beyond its original epicentre in Ituri. The outbreak has already claimed more than 600 lives, making it one of the country’s deadliest Ebola outbreaks in recent years.
The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, which currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment. Health officials, supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and international partners, are continuing contact tracing, surveillance and emergency response efforts to contain the spread. However, ongoing conflict and limited healthcare resources continue to hamper containment operations.
