GEORGE TOWN: Police have arrested four individuals, including a married couple, believed to be linked to an international drug syndicate. Authorities also seized 86kg of methamphetamine worth RM4.31 million following operations in Selangor and Penang.
Penang police chief Datuk Dennis Lim Kwang Keng said the operation followed intelligence sharing between the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and Thai police. The investigation began after Thai authorities arrested a Malaysian man in Hua Hin on August 8 and discovered 166kg of methamphetamine hidden inside his vehicle.
Acting on the intelligence, Malaysian police launched Ops Zorav Terra and arrested two local men and a Thai woman in Selangor on August 13. The following day, a 19-year-old man was detained in Butterworth, where police discovered 80 packages containing 86kg of methamphetamine hidden in a specially modified compartment of a car.
Police believe the drugs originated from a neighbouring country and were intended for the Malaysian market, with the possibility that Malaysia was also being used as a transit point. Five vehicles worth approximately RM420,700 were also seized, bringing the total value of drugs and assets confiscated to about RM4.73 million. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
