Malaysia’s upcoming new-generation MyKad will no longer feature the Touch ’n Go function, marking a change from the existing identity card that can also be used for selected cashless payments.
The National Registration Department (JPN) said the decision was made as part of the transition towards a more secure and modern national identity card, with greater emphasis placed on its core role as an official identification document.
The new MyKad is expected to incorporate enhanced security features and newer technology to strengthen protection against counterfeiting, identity fraud and misuse of personal information.
With the Touch ’n Go feature removed, cardholders will need to rely on other available payment methods for tolls, public transport and other services that previously accepted the MyKad’s Touch ’n Go function.
The introduction of the new-generation MyKad forms part of the government’s broader effort to modernise Malaysia’s identification system while strengthening the security and integrity of citizens’ identity information.
