Deputy Home Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir has stressed that holding a UNHCR card does not exempt anyone from complying with Malaysian laws or protect them from legal action.
He explained that the UNHCR card is only a form of identification issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and does not provide legal status or immunity in Malaysia. Refugees and asylum seekers are still required to obey the country’s laws and may face enforcement if they commit offences.
Akmal Nasrullah also said the government remains committed to managing refugee-related issues in line with national laws while continuing to work with UNHCR on humanitarian matters.
