BELGRADE: At least 10 people, including two children, were killed in a shooting incident in Cetinje, Montenegro, on Wednesday afternoon. Montenegro’s Minister of Interior, Danilo Saranovic, confirmed the incident, according to Xinhua reports.
The incident, which occurred around 3 PM local time, began with a violent altercation at a local restaurant. The suspect, Aco Martinovic, 45, is reportedly still at large, according to Montenegro’s national broadcaster RTCG.
In a press conference, Saranovic stated that four individuals were seriously injured, with two of them undergoing emergency surgery and currently receiving treatment in intensive care.
“All available police units have been deployed to Cetinje, and efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the suspect,” said Saranovic. He emphasized that the incident was isolated and unrelated to organized crime groups. Residents were urged to stay indoors, and the area where the suspect is believed to be hiding has been identified.
Saranovic also announced plans to review firearm regulations, noting that the attack involved illegally owned weapons.
The Montenegro government declared three days of national mourning from January 2 to 4. All public and cultural events have been suspended, and flags will be flown at half-mast.
