KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have rescued four foreign nationals believed to have been kidnapped by a syndicate that used dating apps and social media to lure victims.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department Director Datuk M. Kumar said the syndicate approached victims through platforms including Telegram, WeChat and Badoo, using holiday invitations, job offers and companionship services as bait.
The victims included a 72-year-old Singaporean man and three Chinese women. The Singaporean’s family was reportedly asked to pay S$1 million (RM3.2 million) in ransom and had transferred about S$15,000 (RM61,300) before he was rescued.
Police operations across Kedah, Penang and Kuala Lumpur resulted in six arrests, while two foreign male suspects were shot dead following an exchange of gunfire with police in Alor Setar. Authorities believe the syndicate has been dismantled, although investigations are continuing.
PDRM has urged the public to remain cautious when interacting with strangers through dating apps and social media, especially when offered suspicious travel, employment or companionship opportunities.
