SUBANG JAYA: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) carried out cloud seeding operations in Perlis and Kedah on Thursday to increase the chances of rainfall amid dry weather and reduced rainfall.
The operation targeted Timah Tasoh Dam in Perlis, as well as the Ahning, Pedu, Muda and Beris dams in Kedah. The initiative is aimed at helping maintain reservoir water levels and safeguarding water supplies for domestic use and agricultural irrigation.
An RMAF C-130H aircraft equipped with four tanks was used for the operation. Each tank contained approximately 200kg of sodium chloride (NaCl) mixed with 1,500 litres of water. The aircraft departed Subang Air Base at 12.30pm, with operations completed at around 3.30pm.
METMalaysia said cloud seeding depends on suitable cloud formation and atmospheric conditions. About 90% of cloud seeding operations conducted nationwide in 2026 have successfully produced rainfall either within targeted areas or their water catchments.
