SWADDLING CAN COMFORT BABIES, BUT SAFETY AND WEATHER MATTER

Swaddling has long been practised by Malay families and can help babies feel comfortable and secure, particularly during the first few months of life. When done properly, the gentle wrapping can reduce the Moro or startle reflex, helping some babies settle and sleep more peacefully.

However, swaddling methods can differ depending on the climate. In Malaysia, lightweight and breathable fabrics are generally more suitable because of the country’s warm weather, unlike some thicker swaddles commonly used in colder countries.

Parents should make sure the baby is not wrapped too tightly, especially around the chest, hips and legs. The hips and legs should have enough room to bend and move naturally, while the baby should always be placed on their back to sleep.

Parents should also watch for signs of overheating, including sweating, a hot chest or reddened skin. The swaddle should be stopped once the baby begins showing signs of trying to roll over, rather than waiting until the baby can roll completely.

Ultimately, swaddling is not necessary for every baby. Some babies sleep better when wrapped, while others prefer having their arms and legs free. The priority should always be the baby’s comfort, appropriate temperature and safe sleeping environment.
