Japan is preparing for the return of El Niño, with experts warning that it could bring extreme heat and threaten the country’s agricultural sector.
Meteorologists said the weather pattern may develop into a strong or “super” El Niño, raising concerns over another decline in rice quality, similar to the damage seen during the 2023–2024 event. As a result, many farmers have switched to heat-resistant rice varieties to reduce the impact of rising temperatures.
Experts also warned that prolonged heat could affect other crops and the fisheries sector, urging Japan to strengthen climate adaptation measures while continuing efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
