The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has introduced a new requirement for online service providers to remove or restrict access to harmful content within 24 hours after receiving a directive from the commission.
The measure is aimed at strengthening online safety by ensuring faster action against content that could threaten public order, national security, or the well-being of internet users. Harmful content includes material related to scams, cyberbullying, child sexual exploitation, terrorism, hate speech, and other content that violates Malaysian laws.
According to MCMC, the new requirement forms part of efforts to create a safer and more responsible digital environment while ensuring online platforms remain accountable for the content hosted on their services.
Service providers that fail to comply with the directive may face enforcement action under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and other relevant laws.
MCMC said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving online governance and protecting the public from harmful digital content while maintaining a secure and trusted online ecosystem.
