KOTA KINABALU, July 29 — Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal has been sentenced to five weeks’ imprisonment after being found guilty in court. However, the sentence has been stayed pending the outcome of his appeal, allowing him to remain free while the legal process continues.
The court granted a stay of execution after Shafie filed an appeal against both his conviction and sentence. As a result, the jail term will not take effect unless the appeal is dismissed.
Shafie, who maintains his innocence, said he respects the court’s decision and will continue to pursue the legal avenues available to challenge the ruling. His legal team is expected to present its case before the appellate court in due course.
The case has attracted significant public attention due to Shafie’s position as a prominent political figure in Sabah. For now, the final outcome will depend on the appeal proceedings.
