JAKARTA: Six active volcanoes across Indonesia erupted on the same day, but authorities stressed that the eruptions occurred independently and were not triggered by a single geological process.
The volcanoes involved were Mount Ibu in North Maluku, Mount Semeru in East Java, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Ile Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara, Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait, and Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra.
Indonesia’s Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) said the situation is not considered unusual because the country lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire and has 127 active volcanoes. Each volcano has its own magma system and volcanic processes, with no evidence that the eruptions influenced one another.
Authorities have urged communities living near the affected volcanoes to observe designated exclusion zones, follow official updates and avoid spreading unverified information circulating on social media.
