Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari has reminded organisers that sporting events held during hazy conditions must comply with government guidelines to protect the health and safety of athletes.
He said the Youth and Sports Ministry is continuously monitoring the Air Pollutant Index (API) based on information from the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry and other relevant agencies. Athletes training outdoors are also required to follow safety guidelines, especially when API readings reach unhealthy levels.
Taufiq said the ministry is also coordinating with the National Sports Institute (ISN) and National Sports Council (MSN) to ensure athletes remain in good condition ahead of the upcoming Asian Games.
For areas such as Serian, Sarawak, which have recorded high API readings, outdoor activities in red-zone areas will not be allowed. However, sporting activities may continue in locations where air quality remains safe or moderate. Any sporting event must also receive approval from the ministry, with decisions based on prevailing API conditions and government guidelines.
