IPOH – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reminded government office-holders to maintain discipline and avoid attacking the Federal Government or fellow Unity Government partners while campaigning in the state election.
Speaking after the MADANI KITA with the Tambun Community programme, Anwar said political competition at the state level is permitted in a democratic system, even when the parties involved cooperate at the federal level. However, ministers, deputy ministers and individuals holding positions in government agencies must respect the responsibilities attached to their roles.
He warned that office-holders who choose to openly attack the government should be prepared to step down, as such actions could create a damaging political environment. Candidates are free to debate state-related matters, but they must not undermine the administration they are part of.
Anwar said the matter had already been discussed with Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
He added that parties within the Unity Government should preserve good relations at both federal and state levels so that government services and responsibilities to the people can continue without disruption.
